Make Time for Mentoring

In today’s world of tight budgets and squeezed profit margins, an increasing number of organisations are relying on their experienced, long-standing managers to take more and more responsibility for getting their newbies up to speed.

For anyone who has ever held a management position, the first question that springs to mind is, “With what time?”. Holding the hand of a newcomer to your busy organisation certainly isn’t your number one priority. But could there be something in it for you?

The short answer is, yes. For a start, mentoring develops leadership skills. It’s no longer enough to simply supervise subordinates. Successful companies need good leaders in order to excel. Mentoring someone will allow you to reflect on your own experience and expertise and lead by example. You may even spot things you can do better. Mentoring will also allow you to look at your organisation from a new perspective, viewing the politics, functions and culture through the eyes of your new starter. This unique insight will give you a greater understanding of your colleagues and what makes your company tick.

Being a great mentor demands some pretty smart multi-tasking. Not only are you a teacher and coach, but you’re also required to motivate and inspire. You’ll have to build enough trust to allow your mentee to express his or her concerns or weaknesses fully and openly. Your mentee will look up to you, and that means getting your work ethic, values and priorities in check. Not only this, but a good mentor also keeps a lookout for opportunities that will help to develop the mentee, either through initiating networking or passing along recommendations.

Of course, managing all of this requires the perfect combination of organisation, time-management and great communication skills.
